The system is called Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) and it has been implemented by Mazda on all its diesel engines. Thu 5 Jan 2012 08:50. Mazda 5 - Mazda DPF oil return to sump - TeeCee. From previous traffic here, my understanding is that you have the wrong end of the stick! Diesel is not "added to the DPF filter", it is injected into the exhaust stroke of the engine. It then vapourises and travels to the DPF down the exhaust pipe. The reason why the dipstick has an X mark, if for oil dilution, when your car does a DPF burn some of the diesel ends up in the sump of the car and it waters down the oil (makes it thinner) at the X mark it must be changed, if not you could find you have a runaway diesel engine, in other words, it won't shut off when it should and it'll rev out
My sons car, a Mazda 6 diesel estate had all the problems associated with the DPF filter. Eventually he got it removed and the ECU reprogrammed. Since then he has covered 30000 miles and sailed through 2 MOTs without any problems. As the law stands at the moment in the UK. Removal of a DPF filter will not cause an MOT failure. Reply
